Tourism executives have backed Northern Ireland’s decision to ban the sale of lingerie and women’s clothing at certain places in the island, following the decision by the country’s trade body to condemn Northern Ireland’s vote to leave the EU.

Pensions Minister James Brokenshire said that the decision will encourage investment in the region, and said it will allow businesses to “take the next logical step” in attracting inward investment by investing in research and development in the sector.

“Northern Ireland is facing a challenging economic climate and we are responding to the calls from our partners and people around the world for action to improve the economic prospects of their people,” he said.

Mr Brokenshire also warned against “political meddling” in the region, saying: “We can’t just have our cake and eat it too.

“The trade union movement and our European partners have all voiced their concerns in recent weeks that Northern Ireland cannot take an active role in EU negotiations over the future of the Good Friday Agreement – they should be speaking to our politicians and their own government before acting in that way.”

The Government has called on the North-South Economic Dialogue Group, an umbrella body for 27 EU member states representing the Irish republic, to give the North-South Executive the ability to impose transitional regulations on the EU’s directive “extended territorial jurisdiction” at any time.
